We are proud to present our exhibition at The ’Quin House in Boston @thequinhouseboston — a place where history meets the present, and where ideas, people, and aesthetics intersect.
In connection with the exhibition, Executive Director Tommy Rönngren was interviewed by Kaitlin Boehm (Associate Curator & Collections Manager, Kate Chertavian Fine Art) for Quin Chat.
We spoke about photography, legacy, and the responsibility we have toward the artists who came before us.
”I read the images rather than looked at them.”
”Our obligation is to show his work the way he wanted us to do it.”
The conversation traces the life and work of George Hoyningen-Huene — a Russian-born baron, Vogue’s first chief photographer, and the creator of one of the most quietly influential bodies of work in the history of the medium.
On artifice and intention.
On what it means to preserve an artist’s legacy.
And on why images composed nearly a century ago feel more urgent now than ever.

100 Years On
2026 marks the centenary of George Hoyningen-Huene’s first photographs for Vogue, celebrating one of the most influential photographers in the history of fashion and portraiture. Known for his refined compositions, sculptural lighting, and artistic sophistication, Hoyningen-Huene helped define visual culture across Paris, New York, and Hollywood from the 1920s through the 1960s.
Beginning his career as an illustrator and later collaborating with Man Ray, Hoyningen-Huene quickly rose to become chief photographer at Vogue in Paris. His work shaped the presentation of haute couture and expanded into celebrity portraiture for Vanity Fair. In the 1930s he transitioned to Harper’s Bazaar, where he embraced pioneering colour photography and undertook global travels that resulted in a series of acclaimed photo-books.
In the 1950s, Hoyningen-Huene brought his sophisticated eye to Hollywood, serving as a colour and visual consultant on major films. His work is now represented in the world’s leading museum collections, and he is widely regarded—by contemporaries such as Richard Avedon and by later generations—as one of the true masters of 20th-century photography.
The George Hoyningen-Huene Estate Archives @georgehoyningenhuenearchives , based in Stockholm and led by Tommy and Åsa Rönngren, continues to preserve and promote this legacy through publications, exhibitions, and educational initiatives worldwide.

George Hoyningen-Huene in the Vogue studio, 1934. Photograph by Walter Limot (1902-1984).
Huene was renowned for his dramatic and exquisite use of light, and Walter Limot captured him manipulating the hot studio lights in preparation for a Vogue fashion shoot. Huene had learnt the rudiments of lighting a decade earlier while working as a movie extra - he carefully observed the crews as they lit actors and sets, and later applied what he’d learnt to his fashion images and portraits.

Serge Lifar in La Chatte, Ballets Russes, 1927
George Balanchine’s ballet La Chatte was based on one of Æsop’s fables and tells the story of a young man’s love for a cat, which has been transformed by Aphrodite into a woman.
It was first performed by the great Ukrainian dancer Serge Lifar and the Ballets Russes on 30 April 1927 at the Théâtre de Monte Carlo, Monaco, and commemorated in photographs by George Hoyningen-Huene.

George Hoyningen-Huene captured the latest designs by Trigere, Bruno and Omar Kiam for Harper’s Bazaar. All photographed in the home of Mr and Mrs Oliver Burr Jennings in Cold Spring Harbor.
Through a 20-foot-tall arched Palladian doorway, the rotunda in the entry hall rose forty-five feet and the star pattern of the light fixture was repeated in a large skylight and on the terrazzo floor outlined in brass. At the second floor landing a wrought iron railing ran full circle around the balcony.
