Happy Celestial Birthday to the iconic Judy Garland (1922-1969)
‘The 1940s was a high point for musical films, and Judy Garland starred in MGM’s most successful musical of the decade, Meet Me in St Louis, directed by Vincente Minelli, whom she married in 1945. Huene photographed her just after the release, positioned among the lighting mechanics of the film industry to create an image with layered meaning. Her hand is placed confidently on her hip, but with the other hand she grips the light stand, as though grasping for support against a studio that was wearing her down through overwork. By the late 1940s Garland’s career at MGM was unravelling, but Hollywood relishes a comeback and after a four-year hiatus she returned to the screen in 1954 in A Star is Born, directed by George Cukor. It was the first feature film Huene contributed to as a colour consultant, which reunited him with Garland and marked the beginning of a long period of creative collaboration with Cukor.’
From Keith Lodwick’s brilliant essay ‘Star Portraits’ in the book George Hoyningen-Huene: Photography, Fashion, Film (Thames & Hudson, 2024).

We are honored and proud to have contributed to the amfAR Gala in Cannes at Hôtel Du Cap-Eden-Roc by donating two works by George Hoyningen-Huene – Josephine Baker, 1929 and Balenciaga, 1938.
amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is one of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and advocacy, and we are thrilled that both artworks helped raise an €50,000.
George Hoyningen-Huene was in extraordinary company alongside artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Chopard, Chris Succo, Alexandre Diop, Adrien Brody, Julian Lennon, George Condo, Chris Levine, and James Franco.
We truly believe that Baron George Hoyningen-Huene would have been proud to contribute to such vital research.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone at amfAR, the auctioneer Simon de Pury, all the generous donors, Duran Duran for their amazing performance, and everyone else who made this evening such a great success. @simondepury @julianlennonphotography @amfar @edenrochotel

Bette Davis was a double Oscar winner, receiving Best Actress statuettes for her roles in Dangerous (1935) and Jezebel (1938). George Hoyningen-Huene photographed her in 1936 on a rug reminiscent of a flying carpet, capturing the ascendance of her career.
