🤍Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn🤍
Born on this day in 1911.
Hoyningen-Huene photographed the Swedish model for Vogue in 1938 wearing a pale, flowing evening dress by Vionnet. Lisa studied art and dance in Berlin before moving to Paris and taking up modelling. It would be another decade before she met Irving Penn, star photographer at American Vogue, whom she married in 1950. For this fashion study, Huene took inspiration from the French neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres.

Constance Bennett, Dress by Mainbocher
March 15, 1933
The American star Constance Bennett (1904-1965) was the highest-paid actress in Hollywood in the early 1930s. The back of this vintage print in the archive tells us that Huene shot the portrait at the Hotel George V in Paris, but it wasn’t published until a year later, in the March 1934 issue of Vanity Fair.
The magnificent Hotel George V opened in 1928 and was particularly popular with Americans who travelled to France on the luxury ocean liners of the twenties and thirties.

Lee Miller, Sailcloth Overalls by Yrande, 1930
Today is the 115th Anniversary of Lee Miller’s birth. The American beauty was photographed many times by Hoyningen-Huene for Vogue. She was also his apprentice in the magazine’s Paris studio, where she built on the photographic skills Man Ray had taught her.
Shown here is a platinum palladium print. Swipe to see another image from the same shoot, published in American Vogue, 5 July 1930. She poses alongside Simone Demaria and Ernor (or Erna) Carise. And finally the gelatin silver print in the V&A collection, London, acquired by the museum in 1984.
Designer Helene Yrande chose dark red sailcloth for the overalls, the same fabric used by generations of Brittany fisherman to make their hard-wearing clothes.

Marie Wolkonsky, Dress by Alix
1934
Huene admired the work of Alix, who later designed under the name Madame Grès, and described her as ‘a woman who had a great gift of draping clothes in the manner of Greek sculpture, classical, and regal.’ Here, the lighting emphasises the texture of Alix’s gold and black ciré satin dress, pressed and embossed to resemble leather.
Swipe to see the back of this gorgeous vintage print…

“A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” Salvador Dalí
A closely cropped and intense portrait of the inimitable Salvador Dalí, master of the surrealists. George Hoyningen-Huene met the Spanish artist in Paris, and probably made this portrait there.

It’s 143 years since the birth of photographer and painter Edward Steichen (1879-1973). Steichen and Huene were both celebrated for their glittering contributions to Vogue and Vanity Fair and Huene found inspiration in Steichen’s work during the early years of his career. Both photographers starred in the 1968 exhibition ‘Glamour Portraits’ at MoMA, NYC. The exhibition featured the work of 14 photographers, including Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, and Irving Penn. Steichen was Director of MoMA’s Photography Department from 1947 to 1962.

Sartorial Sophistication
George Hoyningen-Huene was always elegantly dressed. Here he wears a wool three-piece suit with pocket square and delicate floral posy in his button hole. This portrait was taken by Huene’s friend Man Ray (Emmanuel Radnitzky) and is part of the Pompidou’s magnificent Man Ray collection in Paris.

The Beauty of Barbette
Born around 1899 in Texas, Vander Clyde Broadway began his circus career in America, but the star found greater fame on the stages of Paris, from the Moulin Rouge to the Folies Bergère, performing as Barbette.
Avant garde artist Jean Cocteau described Barbette as ‘A great actor, an angel … the friend to all of us … tell everybody that he is no mere acrobat in women’s clothes, nor just a graceful daredevil, but one of the most beautiful things in the theatre.’
